„My first dog, Maxi
Maxi was a first-class guide dog from the very beginning. I can honestly say that he received extraordinary training and upbringing. Maxi was by my side, helping me from practically the moment I went blind, and it was because of him that I had no time to get sucked into that so-called black-hole. At the time I was still working and Maxi basically behaved as a therapist to me and all my colleagues as well. One of my co-workers had an overpowering fear of dogs and has never caressed one, however, Maxi managed to change her feelings. She finally gathered up the courage to pet Maxi and was proud of herself for overcoming this fear. Two other of my co-workers were widowed and it was who else, but Maxi who got them laughing again. We went to several guide dog competitions and managed to get the best scores on two of these; Maxi was the only dog who recognized the trap-door and gave outstanding performances in leading. Maxi literally guided and led me until his last breath, when he passed away everyone who had the fortune of knowing him wept and mourned with me.
Life, however, went on and I was joined by Ali. I know today that this was meant to be, that Ali was destined to end up with me. This dog is a dream. He is not only beautiful, but he is also a faultless guide-dog. Ever since he started working with me 8 years ago, he has not missed a single step or sidewalk. His training and nature are impeccable, I could not ask for a better companion. He means so much to me, more than I could express with words. I would like to tell you a story that indicates how important he is to me: I lost my hearing for a few weeks and this meant that my sense of balance became impaired as well. This was when Ali really displayed his extraordinary abilities; he kept me on course when I strayed off; he stood in front of me when vehicles were approaching as I had trouble registering the cars around me. He also noticed that I am terrified of bicycles and when he saw that I stopped in my tracks due to the bikes, he came to my help and got me moving again; in wintertime he regularly helped me avoid the icy patches, and I could go on…
I am grateful for the life my wonderful dogs have allowed me to lead. I congratulate everyone who received their dogs from Edit and I ask you all to take good care of them and to be the best owners you can possibly be. ”
