Nursing program
The puppy stage and the way a puppy is cared for during this period are extremely important on the road to becoming guide dogs.
The socialisation of puppies must begin even before separation from the mother, but the time comes when conditions in the yard simply do not provide sufficient stimulus. This is when these puppies must be introduced to and conditioned for city life and traffic. They become house-trained, and learn how to live in a family, and during their walks in the city they also become used to most ‘dangerous’ situations and places.
They need to frequently travel by bus or tram; that is to truly live as city dogs in order to mature.
Oftentimes, we are unable to ensure these conditions, and therefore we are continuously searching for families that are able to undertake the raising of a puppy until it reaches the age of one.
Foster families, however, must meet several criteria.
- The families in question cannot have children under the age of five; and all family members must be in agreement regarding the raising and training of the dog
- The applicant may also be a single parent if he/she has a lot of free time. A member of the family must be in close proximity to the dog for the most part of the day.
- These families must be able to ensure adequate living space for the ‘student’, and they must undertake to regularly have the dog school test the canine. (In the city) the presence of other dogs is also desirable, unless they behave aggressively.
If you feel you meet the above requirements, you are up to the task and would be happy to care for and raise a guide dog-to-be, then please get in touch with us.
We cover all dog-keeping expenses.
